National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea (NMOCA) in association with Cultural Heritage Administration presents a special exhibition, Deoksugung Project, focusing on the artistic reinterpretation of the rich cultural and historical heritage preserved by the royal palace of Deoksugung. The project consists of nine artworks installed at the palace's six halls: Junghwajeon, Haenggak, Hamnyeongjeon, Deokhongjeon, Seogeodang and Jeonggwanheon, and the rear garden, for 105 days, from September 19 (Wednesday) to December 2 (Sunday). There will also be an exhibition at the National Museum of Art, Deoksugung for 55 days from September 19 (Wednesday) to October 28 (Sunday), presenting a collection of about 50 works of art, video, documentary and archive items produced during the preparation of the project. The project aims at giving a glimpse into the meaning of cultural heritage around us via a selection of works of art produced by Korean contemporary artists, including installations displayed across the entire palace. The project includes some of the Korea's most admired artists today such as Do Ho Suh, Jung Youngdoo, Yeesookyung, Lim Hangtaek, Kim Young Seok, Chung Seoyoung, Choi Sunghun + Park Sunmin, Ryu HanKil, Lyu Jaeha, Ha Jihoon, and Sung Kiwan, fashion designers, dancers and handicraft artists. The event consists of a variety of cultural programs including an exhibition of traditional carving, installations, sound art, performances and concerts. The highlight of the Deoksugung Project is presentation of works of installation art some of the Korea's top artists created to mark the turbulent history of the palace. Artists exploit the power of imagination to reinterpret the weight of history the palace had to bear, committing themselves to the impossible task of restoring the times gone by and trying to find abstract vocabulary that can help reveal the intangible spiritual values in them. One involves reading a bewitching story about the royal court while another "media mapping" that covers the colorful façade and the tiled roof of Junghwajeon Hall, creates a wonderful scenery for night viewers. The project also includes an educational exhibition specially prepared for children and youths. Held in October, this event will encourage young art lovers to move around the entire palace for the works of art that would guide them to the depth of Korean history related to Deoksugung. Viewers participating in the project will be offered a rare opportunity to witness the creative reinterpretation of the valuable cultural heritage retained in Deoksugung via profound modern aesthetic ideas, and experience the "Deoksugung Living Today" in an extraordinary scheme of time and space in which present coexists with past and future. ● 유구한 역사를 간직한 문화유산의 현대적 재해석

● 덕수궁 곳곳에서 펼쳐지는 한국 현대미술의 오늘

국립현대미술관(관장 정형민)과 문화재청 덕수궁관리소는 덕수궁의 풍부한 문화유산을 현대미술로 재해석한《덕수궁 프로젝트》전을 개최한다. 덕수궁의 중화전, 행각, 함녕전, 덕홍전, 석어당, 정관헌 등 6개 전각과 후원에 총 9개의 프로젝트가 진행되며 9월 19일(수)부터 12월 2일(일)까지 105일간 전시된다. 또한 덕수궁미술관 내부에서는 프로젝트 진행과정에서 완성된 작품, 영상, 다큐멘터리, 아카이브 50여점이 9월19일(수)부터 10월 28일(일)까지 55일간 전시된다.

전시는 한국의 현대미술작가에게 작품을 제작 의뢰하고, 궁궐 곳곳에 설치작업을 시도하여 살아있는 문화유산의 의미를 되짚어보기 위해 기획됐다. 이번 프로젝트에는 서도호, 정영두, 이수경, 임항택, 김영석,정서영, 최승훈+박선민(공동작업), 류한길, 류재하, 하지훈, 성기완 등 한국 현대미술계의 쟁쟁한 작가, 디자이너, 무용가, 공예가 12명이 참여한다. 또한 전통적인 조각·설치를 비롯하여 사운드 아트, 퍼포먼스, 공연 등 다채로운 문화 활동이 수반된다.

덕수궁은 1593년 선조가 임진왜란으로 피신을 갔다가 서울로 돌아와 거처하면서 처음 궁의 역사가 시작된 곳이다. 이후 광해군 시대 ‘경운궁’이라는 이름이 주어졌고, 인목대비가 이 곳에 유폐되기도 했으며,인조가 즉위한 궁이기도 하다. 그러나 그 후 오랫동안 궁의 기능을 상실하고 있다가, 고종이 아관파천 후1897년 경운궁으로 환어하고 같은 해 대한제국을 선포하면서 ‘황궁’으로 새롭게 거듭났다. 그러나 독립국의 위용을 드높이고 동도서기(東道西器)의 아이디어를 실현하고자 했던 고종의 ‘경운궁 프로젝트’는 일제에 의해 강력하게 저지당했다. 고종은 황제의 자리를 강제 양위한 후, 1919년 덕수궁에서 비극적인 죽음을 맞았다.

<덕수궁 프로젝트>는 다양한 시간의 층위를 가진 채 파란만장한 사건의 현장이었던 덕수궁 곳곳에 한국 현대미술가의 작품을 설치한 것이다. 덕수궁의 역사가 지닌 육중한 무게감을 짊어진 채 예술가들은 각자 특유의 상상력과 해석을 더한다. 때로는 그 시대의 역사를 복원하려는 진지하지만 불가능한 시도에 몰두하기도 하고, 때로는 비가시적이고 정신적인 가치를 드러내기 위한 추상적 언어를 찾아내기도 한다. 아나운서가 들려주는 궁중소설이 중화전 행각에서 들려오는가 하면, 화려한 중화전의 단청과 기와를 가득 덮은 미디어 맵핑을 야간에 감상할 수도 있다.

어린이 및 청소년을 위한 전시연계교육도 준비된다. 이번 교육은 덕수궁 곳곳을 다니며 작품을 통해 고궁에 얽힌 우리 민족의 역사를 생생하게 배울 수 있는 감상 프로그램으로, 10월 중에 실시될 예정이다.

관람자들은 서울 도심 한복판에 위치한 덕수궁에서 아름다운 문화유산이 작가들의 깊은 사유가 발현된 현대미술로 재해석되는 현장을 함께할 수 있다. 깊어가는 가을과 함께 과거와 현재, 미래가 공존하는 특별한 시공간 속에서 ‘살아있는 덕수궁의 오늘’을 경험해 보는 뜻 깊은 시간이 될 것이다.
