킴킴 갤러리Kim Kim Gallery는 듀오 작가 김나영과 그레고리 마스(Gregory Maass)가2008년 창립한 갤러리이자 미술작업이다. 킴킴 갤러리는 일정한 공간없이, 기획의도에 따라 작품이 이상적으로 기능할 수 있는 전시장소와 형식을 새롭게 모색하며 현대미술의 구조에 개입해 왔다. 오늘날 미술과 사회의 관계변화에 대한 실용주의적인 접근으로, 기존의 전시 방법과 미술의 경제 구조에 질문을 던지고 “비정규 마켓팅 Unconventional Marketing” 전략으로 그 해결점을 찾고자 하며, 이에 따른 독립성과 효율성을 지향한다.
킴킴 갤러리는 미술작품이 어떻게 생산되고 유통되고 소비되는가에 대한 새로운 가능성을 만들어 가며, 킴킴 갤러리의 역할은 작품의 상업화, 프로모션 보다는 작품에 더 높은 가치를 부여한다는데 있다. 갤러리는 작가를 방호하고 자율권을 주어야 한다는 것이 킴킴 갤러리의 생각이다.
킴킴 갤러리 디렉터이며 작가이기도 한 김나영과 그레고리 마스는 작가와 갤러리스트로서의 역할을 분명히 구분하고 있다. 이들이 갤러리스트로서 가지는 관심은 미술의 경제적인 면이 아니라 고상한(highbrow) 미술을 어떤 방식으로 대변하는가 하는 문제이다.
킴킴 갤러리는 그동안 국내외 작가들의 개인전 또는 단체전을 각각 다른 장소에서 진행해 왔는데, 작가 선정기준은, 작품의 개인성, 독립성, 독창성이며, 작가에게 더 큰 권한과 자율성을 주는 것을 지향한다.
2011년 정서영 개인전 《사과 대 바나나》는 서울 계동 현대본사 지하에 위치한 현대문화센터 지하에서 열렸다. 십여 년간 잊혀졌던 아파트 모델하우스 두 채를 전시공간으로 유치, 시간이 멈춘 시대적, 건축적 타임캡슐 공간으로 재탄생시켰다. 킴킴 갤러리는 한 기업의 개척정신과 아파트 신화에 대한 시대적 로망이 남아있는 특수한 공간에 전시를 유치, 장소성과 작품 사이의 색다른 시너지를 유발하고자 했다. 정서영의 소박하고 순수한 작품은 아파트 모델하우스라는 생경한 공간에서 자가논리적 생존방식을 터득, 공간에 대한 관찰력과 사물에 대한 응집력의 만남이 되었다.
2012년《Stuffs! 성낙영, 성낙희 2인전》은 강남 도산공원 근처의 공사중인 사무실 공간에서 열렸다. 킴킴 갤러리는 자매인 두 작가의 특수한 상황에 주목했는데, 이들은 각자 예술이 서식하는 복잡한 공간을 만들고 자신들도 그안에 산다. 이들의 공간은 마치 지퍼처럼 연결되었고, 제 3자의 개입이 불가능한 모순어법과 같다. 변형이 진행중인 공간에서 열린 전시는 두 작가의 상이하나 균등한 작품세계의 충돌과 공유를 야기했다.
킴킴 갤러리는 작품이 이상적으로 기능할 수 있는 전시공간을 모색하며, 갤러리와 작가는 전시공간을 함께 구현한다. 킴킴 갤러리의 전시는 우리가 속한 시대, 사회의 대중적인 취향에 도전하며, 상업화된 대중문화의 일부가 되기 어려운 고객을 끌어들이는 기능을 한다.
킴킴 갤러리의 기동성있는 기획력과 실용적인 접근이 주목을 받는 것은, 킴킴 갤러리의 예술적 동기가 매력적이기 때문일 것이다. 킴킴 갤러리는 구체적인 아이디어와 비전을 발전시키는 프로젝트를 다양한 조건에 적용해 연쇄적으로 실현해 나가려고 한다.
킴킴 갤러리는 2013년 3월 스위스 작가 로버트 에스터만(Robert Estermann)과의 협업을 서울의 코너아트스페이스와 대구의 한 단체전에서 전시하는 프로젝트를 준비중이며, 후반기에는 영국작가 더글라스 파크(Douglas Park)의 작품과 그에게 영감을 받아 30여명의 작가들이 한 작품들을 함께 선보이는 《더글라시즘 페스티벌 Douglasism Festival》을 기획하고 있다.

김나영은 서울대학교 조소과와 파리 국립미술학교를 졸업했다.
독일인 그레고리 마스는 소르본 대학 철학과, 파리 국립미술학교, 파리 조형예술 인스티튜트, 네덜란드 얀반아이크 아카데미를 졸업했다. 2005년 듀오를 결성한 이후, 유럽과 한국 등지에서 활동.
주요 개인전으로는 《부적자 생존》(3bisf, 현대예술센터,액상 프로방스, 2009), 《일찍 일어나는 새가 벌레를 잡는다》(공간 해밀톤, 2010),《하와이에는 맥주가 없다》(아트클럽 1563, 2012) 등이 있다.

Kim Kim Gallery is an art gallery and an art work itself, established in 2008 by duo artists, Nayoungim & Gregory Maass. (www.kimkimgallery.com) Kim Kim Gallery, with no specific physical space, has intervened in the structure of contemporary art, by seeking for exhibition spaces and formats in which art works can function idealistically according to our project intentions. As a pragmatic approach to the changes of the relationships between art and society at present days, we seek for “Unconventional Marketing” so as to solve the questions that we throw about the existing exhibition methods and art’s economic structures, and accordingly aim both independency and efficiency. Kim Kim Gallery’s role in the art field lies on granting higher values on art works that the commercialization or promotion of them, by creating new possibilities of how they are produced, distributed, and consumed. It is the perspective of Kim Kim Gallery that an art gallery should protect artists and authorize them rights of autonomy.
Nayoungim & Gregory Maass, the directors of Kim Kim Gallery and artists, clearly separate their roles as artists and gallerists. As the gallerists, they put their concerns into the matter in which methods they could speak for the highbrow art rather than its economical aspects. Kim Kim Gallery has opened solo or group exhibitions for both domestic and international artists in diverse places, and its criteria of artists’ selections are the individuality, independency, and creativity of the art works to take aims in order to allow them greater authorities and autonomies than ever.
Apple vs. Banana, a solo exhibition of Chung Seoyoung in 2011, was held at the Hyundai Culture Center located inside Hyundai’s Headquarter in Gye-dong, Seoul. By utilizing two apartment model houses, which have been forgotten for more than ten years, the exhibition gave them rebirth as architectural spaces of time capsule where time stopped. In this exhibition, Kim Kim Gallery tried to provoke unusual synergy between the placeness and the works by bringing an art exhibition into a special space where an epochal roman of a Hyundai’s frontier spirit and the myth of apartment building still remains. The works of Chung Seoyoung acquired method for survival logic by themselves in the unusual space as model house, then become an encounter of cohesiveness toward the sharp observation and the objects.
Stuffs! Duo Exhibition of Sung Nakyoung & Sung Nakhee was held in an office space under construction in Gangnam area. Kim Kim Gallery paid its attention to a particular situation of the two artists who are sisters. The artists respectively create complex spaces where their arts inhabit as well as they live. These spaces are connected as if they were zippers, into which others are unable to intrude; such a condition looks like a wording of contradiction. Being held in a space in which an alteration was in process, the exhibition caused both conflicts and sharing of the artists’ art worlds that are disparate but even at the same time.
Kim Kim Gallery looks for spaces where the art works can function idealistically, and the gallery and the artists materialize the spaces together. The exhibitions by Kim Kim Gallery challenge the demotic tastes of the society of our time, but operate to draw customers who are not easily able to be part of the commercialized pop cultures.
The reason that Kim Kim Gallery’s maneuverability in its planning ability and the pragmatic approaches have received others’ attention, would be probably due to the attractiveness of its artistic motivation. The gallery has made efforts to realize such projects in succession as developing concrete ideas and visions through adapting them with diverse conditions.
Kim Kim Gallery is now preparing for a collaboration work with a Swiss artist, Robert Estermann, in this upcoming March 2013, at the Corner Art Space in Seoul as well as for a project of a group exhibition in Daegu, Korea. The gallery also plans Douglasism Festival in Seoul. “Douglasism” requests to become a creative representation of the individuality, eccentricity and uniqueness which is expressed in the work of a british artist, Douglas Park in cooperation with other artists and through their work.

Gregory Maass studied philosophy in Sorbonne University, Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts of Paris, Institute of Fine-Arts in Paris and Jan Van Eyck Academy in Netherlands. Since 2005 as duo, they work mainly in Europe and Korea. Their major exhibitions include The Survival of the Shitest (3bisf, Contemporary Art Center, Aix-en-Provence, 2009), The Early Worm Catches The Bird (Space Hamilton, 2010), There is No Beer in Hawaii (Art Club1563, 2012), and so on.
