'커넥트1:스틸 액츠'는 개보수 공사 완료가 2017년 4월로 예정된 상황에서 공사를 중단하고 열린다. 관람객들에게 공사 과정까지도 보여주려는 취지다. 아트선재는 개관 3년전인 1995년에도 철거 예정인 한옥에서 개관 기획전 '싹'을 개최한 바 있다.
이번 전시는 개관 기획전을 연 1995년부터 2005년까지의 작업을 돌아본다. 김소라, 이불, 정서영 등 여성 작가 3명과 더불어 1980년대 말 이불 작가가 소속돼 활동했던 '뮤지움' 그룹의 작가들이 참여한다.
김선정 아트선재센터 관장은 "이번 전시는 아트선재센터의 과거를 되돌아보고 그것을 기록하는 과정에서 기획된 것"이라며 "이불·정서영·김소라 등이 과거 아트선재에서 선보인 개인전을 재해석해 보여줌으로써 과거를 현재화하려는 시도"라고 했다.
이불은 1998년 아트선재센터에서 첫번째 개인전을 열었다. 그는 전시장 3층에서 대표작 '사이보그' 시리즈(1998)와 함께, 1990년대 이후 미술관에서 전시되기 어려웠던 '장엄한 광채'(2016)를 다시 선보인다.
특히 '장엄한 광채'는 화려하게 장식한 생선 98마리를 비닐팩으로 싸 벽면에 빼곡하게 걸어놓은 작품이다. 생선이 썩는 냄새마저도 작품의 일부다. 김 관장은 "생선이 썩는 과정이 작업의 일부라 뉴욕현대미술관(MoMA)의 프로젝트 갤러리에 전시됐다가 철거되기도 했다"며 "1997년 이래 처음으로 미술관에서 관람객과 만나게 됐다"고 했다.
전시장 2층에서는 2000년 정서영의 개인전 '전망대'에서 보여줬던 세 개의 작업, '전망대'(1999), '꽃'(1999), '수위실'(2000)을 새 작업들과 함께 선보인다. 김 관장은 "정서영은 전통적인 조각재료에서 탈피해 공사장 부산물을 재료로 이용하기 시작한 작가 중 하나"라며 "한국 경제의 성장 과정에서 아파트와 함께 등장한 수위실 등의 이질적인 공간 등 시대성을 반영한 작업"이라고 설명했다.전시장 1층에서는 2004년 '안타르티카'전에서 선보였던 김소라의 '라이브러리' 프로젝트(2004)가 새롭게 구현됐다. 그 외에도 뮤지움 그룹의 강홍구, 고낙범, 나카무라 마사토, 샌정(정승), 세스 프랭클린 스나이더 등의 작업이 향후 있을 ‘뮤지엄’ 전시의 예고편으로 마련됐다.

Artist Talk: Still Acts—Sora Kim in Conversation with Haeju Kim and Young-june Lee

Art Sonje Center presents three artist talks in the framework of Connect 1: Still Acts to be held on November 5, 9 and 12, 2016. The series of talks will take the form of conversations: the participating artists Seoyoung Chung, Sora Kim, and Lee Bul will be paired with Hyunjin Kim, Haeju Kim and Hiroki Azuma, who contributed to the exhibition catalog with their essays on each artist respectively. On November 9, 6 PM, Sora Kim in Conversation with Haeju Kim and Young-june Lee will take place, to explore Kim’s multifaceted, performative projects with focus on her solo Antarctica (2004), through which the artist experimented the possibility of relational approaches. The talk program will offer a chance to read in deep the artists’ works that engaged with our contemporary conditions of life since their earlier practices. Furthermore, it will provide discussions for a closer understanding of Connect 1: Still Acts’ thematic range as an exhibition that attempts to reinterpret the collection of the institution by re-generating past discourses on the current ground.
About the Artist
Sora Kim currently lives and works in Seoul. Her work, conveyed through transiently mingling and dissipating forms of text, sound and performance, indicates things that could become everything and nothing at the same time. Kim’s work has been exhibited in numerous shows around the world, including solo shows such as Songs from knee to chin, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon, Seoul, Korea (2016), Three Foot Walking, Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, Denmark (2013); Abstract Walking, Art Sonje Center, Seoul, Korea (2012).
Haeju Kim
Haeju Kim is an independent curator and writer. Kim has curated exhibitions and performance programs such as Moving / Image (Seoul Art Space Mullae, 2016), Society of Choreography (Nam June Paik Art Center, 2015), Decisive Moment (Korea National Contemporary Dance Company and Arko Art Archive, 2014) and Once is not enough (Audio Visual Pavilion, 2014).
Young-june Lee
