SCHNITT UND AKNE, Cut and Acne

Art public for the EDGE East Side Tower (Berlin’s tallest future office building) currently under construction at Warschauer Brücke in Berlin. “Schnitt und Akne” has been selected as one of the finalist projects of the worldwide art competition hold in 2021.

“Schnitt und Akne” (“Cut and Acne”) developed for the EDGE East Side Tower in Berlin and its forecourt involves its surroundings through its radically realistic and authentic imagery with a variety of references. “Schnitt und Akne” functions here as both spatial and metaphorical brackets and entanglements, which include diverse spaces of meaning and possibilities and reflect them in their not entirely foreseeable dynamic. In terms of content, it is about topics such as youth, future, self (discovery), vulnerability, new exposures, interfaces, walking the line, the question of identity and location. The huge and at the same time anonymized depiction of a culturally shameful skin disorder (of mostly young people) on a classic advertising medium (light box) creates an abstraction and at the same time aestheticization. As a model for many other emancipation movements, cultural strategies such as “acting out” and “pride” are implemented in a figurative and sculptural way. The cut in the floor of the platform as an injury to the structure acts on a different level than the acne image in the light box, and at the same time transfers the body analogy to the architecture.
