제프 게이블 Jeff Gable (예명 토마스 스톨페레 Thomas Stolperer):

제프 게이블은 미국 오리건 주 포틀랜드 출생 후 네브라스카주의 디케이터에서 유년기를 보냈다. 1992년 캔사스 주립대학에서 학사를 받고 1995년 프랫 인스티튜트에서 석사를 받았다. 2001년과 2002년에 걸쳐 뉴욕의 스펜서 브라운스톤 갤러리에서 첫 번째 개인전이 열렸으며, 이 전시는 뉴요커의 시즌 하이라이트로 선정됐고 마시밀리아노 지오니 (Massimiliano Gioni) 가 플래쉬 아트에 리뷰했다. 최근 오스트레일리아, 호바트의 현대미술관(museum of old and new art)의 개관전 “모나니즘(Monanism)”에 소개되었으며, 현재 뉴욕의 스펜서 브라운스톤 갤러리 작가이다.

이야기가 있는 드로잉:

게이블의 작은 연필 드로잉에 등장하는 가상의 인물들은 짧은 캡션을 동반한다.

1990년부터 2000년대 초 연필이나 펜으로 긁적이듯이 한 드로잉은 현대미술에서 주목 받았던 기법인데 게이블도 이 계열의 작가이다. 게이블의 초상화에 등장하는 가상의 인물들은 휘갈겨 쓴 읽기 힘든 문장의 제목과 같이 보여져, 드로잉의 픽션 혹은 논픽션의 이야기들을 비대칭적 복문 또는 무종지문으로 확장시킨다. 게이블의 작품의 다른 특이 요소는 긴 제목이다. 예를 들면 “그 놈들이...” 혹은 “40대 중반의 나쁜 년이...”, “1970년대 어떤 놈이...”와 같은 속어로 시작되거나 단순히 “나쁜 자식이...”로 시작된다.

번역/각색:

게이블은 문학작품을 번역하여 일러스트레이션 도판이 들어간 책이나 오디오 북을 발간하여 전시하기도 한다. 스테판 츠바이크 (Stephan Zweig)의 소설 “Vierundzwanzig Stunden aus dem Leben einer Frau (한 여인의 인생 중 24시간)”을 번역한 대형 만화책을 선보였으며, 토마스 만 (Thomas Mann) 의 소설 “Gladius Dei (글라디우스 데이)” 시각/청각적으로 번역 및 각색한 작품도 있다. 2009년에는 독일 작가 카를 쥬크마이어 (Carl Zuckmayer) 의 1935년 소설 "Salwàre oder Die Magdalena von Bozen"의 번역본 “The Moons Ride Over(달이 점령하다)”을 리인액트먼트(re-enactment)하여 페이스 북을 통해 소개하였다. 게이블은 또한 핀란드 문학과 Veps 언어(핀란드 구어)를 번역하는 등 언어학에 관심을 둔 일련을 작품을 하는데, 그의 번역은 관례적인 번역기법 이 아니라 책의 내용을 직역법으로 묘사한다.

이번 킴킴 갤러리 전시에서 게이블은 카를 쥬크마이어의 “The Moons Ride Over” 소설을 참조하여, 전시장에서 in-situ 작업으로 한 대형 벽화 드로잉 2점, 소형 드로잉 30여점, 토마스 만의 소설 “Gladius Dei” 을 번역 및 각색한 에니메이션 작품을 보인다.

Jeff Gabel (aka Thomas Stolperer): 

Jeff Gabel was born 1968 in Portland, Oregon. Having spent his childhood years in Decatur, Nebraska, he completed a BFA at Kansas State University in 1992, and an MFA at Pratt Institute in 1995. His first solo exhibition in New York City took place at Spencer Brownstone Gallery in 2001-02, and was called a "season highlight" by The New Yorker. The show was also reviewed in Flash Art by Massimiliano Gioni. He has most recently exhibited work in "Monanism", the inaugural exhibition at the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart, Australia. Gabel is currently represented by Spencer Brownstone Gallery in New York, NY.

Drawings with stories:

Gabel's small pencil portraits of imaginary figures accompanied by short captions on Paris Bleedproof Paper For Pens, his primary medium and format for over a decade during the 90's and early 2000s, were retrospectively viewed as representative of the "dumb line" trend which became prevalent in the visual arts, drawing in particular.1 Since then, Gabel has been drawing on clay board and smooth-sanded gesso board, in addition to paper. His work now typically involves small-scale portraits or figures rendered from imagination, accompanied by scrawled captions, wholly or partially fictional, which often expand into drawn-out multi-clause or run-on sentences. The stories often begin with the phrase “Some fucker…” or a variation, like "Some fucking woman in her 40's…" "Some guy from the 1970's…" or simply "A fucker…"2 This caption style has become one of the more recognizable features identified with Gabel’s work.

Translations/Adaptations:

Gabel has also exhibited translations of different types of writing, primarily literature, into various formats (bound typed books w/ hand illustrations, audio books, etc.). His translated adaptation of the novella "Vierundzwanzig Stunden aus dem Leben einer Frau"(Twenty-four Hours in the Life of a Woman) by Stephan Zweig, rendered in pencil in large-scale comic book format, and his audio/visual translation/adaptation of "Gladius Dei" by Thomas Mann have been exhibited and reviewed repeatedly. In 2009, he created and performed a complete re-enactment in Facebook of the 1935 novel "Salwàre oder Die Magdalena von Bozen," by Carl Zuckmayer called The Moons Ride Over, after the novel's English translation title. His work also includes translations from Finnish and the Veps language. Gabel's translations typically attempt a relatively literal portrayal of the content, while largely ignoring editorial conventions and appropriateness of style and voice.

For Kim Kim Gallery show, he will realize a series of drawings referring to the novel "The Moons Ride Over" by Carl Zuckmayer and exhibit his audio/visual translation/adaptation of "Gladius Dei" by Thomas Mann.

Carl Zuckmayer(1896 –1977) was a German writer and playwright.

he wrote the script for the movie Der blaue Engel (the blue Angel) (starring Marlene Dietrich) based on the novel Professor Unrat (Professor Filth) by Heinrich Mann. In 1931, his play Der Hauptmann von Köpenick (Captain of Köpenick) premiered and became another success, but his plays were prohibited when the Nazis came to power in Germany in 1933. Zuckmayer and his family moved to their house in Austria, where he published a few more works. After the Anschluss, he was expatriated by the Nazi government, and the Zuckmayers fled via Switzerland to the United States in 1939. In 1966, he became a Swiss citizen. Zuckmayer died 1977 in Saas Fee, Switzerland.
