Stefan Ettlinger: A Sichuan Ghost Story

at Galerie Ursula Walbröl
Dusseldorf
 -

Stefan Ettlinger (* 1958) studied painting with Alfonso Hüppi at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
His paintings, videos and music pieces are based on the principle of montage. In the past years, he has succeeded in developing an increasingly convincing, free and undogmatic style and in integrating experiences gained from the production of music and the technology of video and film in his paintings that are frequently composed of different, individual images referring to his own photographs, to television and video stills.
In his new works, fades from different film sequences form the basis for expanding the various image levels into the depth of the image space as well. Like only few other contemporary artists, Stefan Ettlinger is masters the 'painting of a world in motion'.

The focus of thIs exhibition is on a new 71-part series of drawings that can be read as a kind of picture story relating the visual impressions of his stays in China and Korea. The way in which he puts together the individual image worlds gives rise to imaginary picture spaces in the viewer. Painterly accents are placed by the use of slight traces of color.
