Tell Me Tell Me: Australian and Korean Art 1976 - 2011 is a major exhibition of Korean and Australian contemporary art celebrating 2011 as the Australian-Korean Year of Friendship.
The project highlights the historical and ongoing connections between Australian and Korean art and showcases works from the collections of both museums.

The exhibition is a first-time collaboration between the MCA in Sydney nd the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul (NMOCA) and is the first stage in a two-part cultural exchange of art and ideas. It is inspired by Nam June Paik’s 1976 visit to Sydney and the 1976 Biennale of Sydney, that included a group of important Korean artists.
Tell Me Tell Me explores conceptual, fluxus and technological art being created in both Korea and Australia at that time and regional variations in both countries over three decades to the present day.

The exhibition also explores the idea of artists using recent art histories to influence new work and sculpture, installation and object-based art forms now under the weight of conceptualism.
The core of the exhibition comprises a significant collection of historical works by important artists from both countries, including Nam June Paik, Marr Grounds, Terry Reid, Noel Sheridan, Stelarc, Ken Unsworth, Shim Moon-Seup, Kang So-Lee, Insic Quik, Rosalie Gascoigne, Gaiyabidja Lalara, Don Gundinga and Lee U Fan.

The contemporary Australian and Korean artists featured include Brook Andrew, Louise Weaver, Nyapanyapa, Charlie Sofo, Brown Council, Lou Hubbard, Stuart Ringholt, TV Moore, Beom Kim, Yeesookyung, Haegue Yang, Hyun Ki Park, Chung SeoYoung, Kim Eull.


Jointly curated by MCA Curator Glenn Barkley and NMOCA Curator Inhye Kim, the exhibition will be held at the National Art School Gallery, Darlinghurst and will open on 17 June 2011.
It will later travel to the NMOCA in Seoul where it will be exhibited from 8 November 2011 to 19 February 2012.

This exhibition is a partnership between the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, Australia and the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea.

한호 수교 50주년을 기념하는 한국-호주 현대미술전이다.
1976년 시드니 비엔날레의 한국 참여를 기점으로, 1970년대의 미술담론이 현재까지도 유효하게 작용하는 지점을 탐색한다. 호주 원주민 미술을 대거 포함하고 미술의 주술적 기능을 고려하면서, 글로벌리즘에 저항하고 지역성을 부각한 것이 특징이다.
한국과 호주, 1976년과 2011년이라는 서로 다른 시공간을 교차하면서, 철학적 깊이와 가벼운 유희가 조화를 이룬 전시이다.
양국 작가 40여 명의 작품 120여 점이 공개된다.

국립현대미술관은 시드니현대미술관(Musuem of Contemporary Art, MCA)과 공동주최로, 오는 11월 10일(목)부터 2012년 2월19일(일)까지 국립현대미술관 과천본관에서 <텔미텔미: 한국_호주 현대미술 1976-2011>전시를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 한호 수교 50주년을 기념한 대규모 문화사업의 일환으로, 양국 외교통상부의 적극적인 후원으로 이루어졌다. 1970년대 이후 현재까지 양국 현대미술의 일단을 읽을 수 있는 보기 드문 기회로, 지난 6월 호주 시드니에서의 전시를 마치고 오는 11월 한국에서 더 큰 규모로 개최된다.

이 전시는 1976년 제 2회 시드니 비엔날레의 한국 작가 참여와 같은 해 백남준의 시드니 방문을 기점으로 하여, 당시의 국제적인 미술담론 -특히 환경미술과 개념미술- 이 지금까지도 유효한 지점을 탐색한 것이다. 이우환의 작품을 비롯한 1976년 비엔날레의 출품작이 재등장하고, 심문섭, 이강소 등 당시 비엔날레 참여 작가의 70년대 작품과 현재 작품이 동시에 전시된다. 또한 미술관을 떠난 예술작품의 위치, 삶과 일체하는 예술의 본래적 기능 회복, 서로 다른 것과의‘관계’와‘만남’을 통해 에너지를 교환하는 예술 등을 주장하는, 동시대 작가들의 작업이 함께 전시된다.

에밀리 캐임 캔와리, 냐판야파 등 호주 원주민 미술(aboriginal art)의 대표적인 작품에서부터, 1970년대 스텔락, 존 데이비스 등의 실험적인 미술, 그리고 현재 루이스 위버, 브룩 앤드류, 해리 뉴엘 등 다문화주의의 표본이라 할 수 있는 다양한 현대미술 작품 등이 총망라되었다. 한국의 작가로는 이우환, 백남준 등의 1970년대 작품을 시작으로, 이수경, 김범, 양혜규, 정서영, 김홍주, 김을 등의 작품이 전시된다. 호주와 한국, 1976년과 2011년이 만나는 특별한 시공간으로의 여행이 될 것이다.
