In order to facilitate the meeting of art and society, and to re-affirm the social role of art in December 2006 Artsonje Center presents, Somewhere in Time. This is where art participates in reality, and where the social models and the consciousness of our time that art exposes are communicated or shared with the audience. Through this exhibition without halting discussion of history and society we wish to re-activate the role of art while from various artists’ vantage points we try to propose possible future scenarios. Further, we hope that the people who came to see this exhibition will help those who have seen it to look at the work of modern art in a more active manner.
From times of old, the social purpose of art is an issue that is subject to dispute. This exhibition focuses on the sense of relationship that society and art have begun to knit, it is actually as though we are trying to travel through time by time machine and look at the periods of the past while mixing in the voices of artists who pre-view the future. Beginning with the Minjoong artists that arose under authoritarian rule in Korea in the 1980s, labour, modernization, urban over-population, social memory and experience became significant topics, after the 1990s and 2000s artworks sought harmony with space.
This exhibition is like a guidebook for a journey that compresses visual space and along with the memory of the past and somewhere of the present that explores social circumstance. Somewhere in Time makes the communal memory and historical experience of visual space a stage that probes reality with questioning, suspicion and conviction.
The title, Somewhere in Time is taken from the 1980 Jeannot Szwarc film that was released under the title, Love’s Heaven’s River in Korea. In this film as though forgetting reality, the protagonist travels through time to visit the love of his past. In the Somewhere in Time exhibition, by acknowledging art’s past and present we might be able to look upon the future that is incubated in the past and thereby search for the social possibility of art. That is to say, by turning back time and sharing the exhibition becomes a journey where we find new points.
With the works of 1980s minjoong artists at its nucleus this exhibition features the work of young artists from at home and abroad. There are 19 artists in total. The work of Min Jeong Ki and Ju Chaehwan reflect the consciousness of the 1980s, and through a unique visual language of social exchange the work of Kim Sora, Kim Beom, Gimhongsok, Bae Younghwan the problems that emerged from globalisation and supranationalisation that became the social environment are metaphorically expressed along with the works of Kim Young Eun and Nam Hwayeon.
Declaration of North-South Unity (Ko Sankeum), Gwangju Uprising (Oh Heinkuhn), Google Earth (Lee Eunu) the artists of Somewhere in Time ‘relate’ with the uneven distribution of various contemporary social issues across visual space. In this way the exhibition is a space where the historical experience of the individual and social problems intersect exposing numerous points simultaneously while starting to cry for an arrival at a new state of understanding of your and my or perhaps, our ‘somewhere.’
《썸웨어 인 타임》전은 사회와 미술의 ‘관계성’에 주목한 전시이다. 마치 시간여행을 떠나듯 과거와 현재, 그리고 미래에 대한 작업을 통해 관람객들과 소통하는 기회를 만들고자 기획되었다. 본 전시에서는 미술과 사회가 만나는 접점을 살펴보고, 미술의 사회적 역할을 재조명할 것이다.
국내외 작가 총 19 명이 참여하는 이번 전시는 역사와 사회에 대해 ‘말걸기’를 멈추지 않는 다양한 작품들로 구성되어 ‘미래에 대한 시나리오’를 작가들의 관점을 통해 전망할 수 있게 하였다.
미술의 사회적 역할은 예술의 역사만큼이나 오래된 논쟁거리이자 이슈이다. 이번 전시는 마치 타임머신을 타고 시간 여행을 떠나듯 과거와 현재, 나아가 미래를 전망하는 작가들의 목소리를 혼재시킨다. 1980년대 한국의 특수한 정치적 상황에서 비롯된 민중미술가의 작업들이 현대화, 도시의 팽창, 사회적 기억과 경험을 화두로 한 1990년-2000년대 이후의 작품들과 한 전시공간에서 어우러진다.
이번 전시는 마치 시공간을 압축시켜 여행하는 한편의 여행안내서와 같이 관람자들이 과거의 기억과 현재의 ‘어딘가에(somewhere)’ 위치한 사회적 사건들을 탐험하게 함으로써, 공동체의 기억과 사적인 경험 사이를 오가는 시공간을 무대로, 현실에 대한 확신을 되묻는 기회가 될 것이다.
전시 제목인 ‘Somewhere in Time’은 ‘사랑의 은하수’라는 제목으로 국내에 소개된 지놋 스작(Jeannot Szwarc) 감독의 1980년작 영화 제목을 인용한 것이다. 영화에서 주인공은 과거의 사랑을 찾아 긴 시간여행을 떠난다. 《썸웨어 인 타임》전에서는 미술계의 현재와 과거를 성찰함으로써 과거로부터 잉태된 미래를 조망하고 미술의 사회적 실천 가능성을 찾고자 한다. 즉, 이번 전시는 시간을 되돌리고 공유하는 방식을 통해 새로운 접점들을 발견하려는 여정인 것이다.
전시는 민정기의 <포옹>, 주재환의 <짜장면 배달부> 등 1980년대의 시대의식을 반영한 작업과 함께 독특한 어법으로 사회와 교감해 온 김지원의 드로잉 <위장> 연작, 김소라의 <코스모 비탈레 프로덕션 2>, 김범의 <청사진 연작>, 김홍석의 <Oval Talk>, 배영환의 <나의 20년> 등을 비롯, 1990년대 이후 세계화ㆍ초국가화되는 사회적 환경에서 발생한 문제들을 은유적으로 표현하는 젊은 작가 김영은의 <작별>, 남화연의 드로잉 연작, 요나스 달버그의 <Invisible Cities>, 문화적 차이와 소통의 방식을 다룬 얀스 헤닝의 <Turkish Joke>, 일본에 숨어있는 빈 라덴을 연기하는 아이다 마코토의 <The Video of a man calling himself Bin Laden staying in Japan>, 시간의 흐름 속에 변화되는 것들을 보여준 이주요의 <Songs in the Jumping Skirt> 등을 아우른다.
이번 전시에서 작가들은 남북공동성명(고산금, <A Gesture Life>), 광주민주항쟁(오형근, <광주이야기> 연작), 우도(플라잉시티, <웃음의 합창>), google earth(이은우, <google landscape>), 양극화된 사회의 조율 가능성(임민욱, <잘못된 질문>), 어린이들의 획일적 충성 서약(코큰 에르건, <The Flag>) 등 오늘날의 시공간에 편재된 다양한 사회 문화적 이슈들을 다룬다. 또한 이번 전시는 이와 같이 개인의 사적 경험과 사회적 문제들이 교차하는 다양한 관점들을 동시다발적으로 보여주면서 너와 나, 혹은 우리의 ‘somewhere(어딘가)’에서 피어나는 새로운 소통의 상황을 이끌어낸다.
