This exhibition was intended as an innovative and exploratory statement that addressed the varied concerns and sites of contemporary art in an ‘international’ world. It encompassed a selection of artists from Australia and other countries whose works embraced mixed forms and multiple identities. Localities of Desire sought to disclose a sense of the varied kinds of meaning that might be addressed in a post-colonial approach to culture; the multiple centres of meaning that may be operable within a particular culture, within a group of works, or even a single work.

Localities of Desire brought together 27 artists from diverse cultural backgrounds to explore cultural difference, rather than similarity, exhibiting works in many media and styles, and made from radically different perspectives. There was an emphasis on respecting the particular origins, traditions and frames of reference of the artists participating. It was also important to see that these diverse cultural perspectives existed in a world of criss-crossing circuits and meanings, a world where communications were speeding faster with every new technical development.

The exhibition sought to disclose a sense of the varied kinds of meaning that might be addressed in a post-colonial approach to culture.
