엽서 프로그램 the postcard program @ the 12th Seoul Mediacity Biennale

 2023년 9월 21일부터 11월 19일까지 개최되는 제12회 서울미디어시티비엔날레 《이것 역시 지도》는 디아스포라, 이주, 언어와 경계처럼 우리가 잘 안다고 생각하는 기존의 개념을 다시 보고 새롭게 읽기 위한 지도로 소개됩니다. 비엔날레의 ‘지도 그리기’는 오늘날의 물리적이고 문화적인 이주로부터 생겨난 사회적 경계를 인식하고, 다양한 미디어 환경으로 야기되는 복합적인 연대를 통해 지리적 영토에 국한하지 않는 예술적 소통의 가능성을 살펴보고자 합니다. 이와 같은 접근은 디아스포라나 경계 밖의 삶에서 서로 매개하고 연결하는 대안적 상태와 사회적 생태계에 관한 예의 주목에서 비롯됩니다. 이것은 계속해서 변화하는 동시대 서울과 서울 주변의 산업적 환경에 연루된 글로벌 관계들을 인식하는 방법이면서, 동시에 도시와 국가 경계의 안팎에서 외부적인 요인은 물론 자발적인 이유로 이주와 이동을 감행하는 다양한 사람들의 움직임을 이해하는 경로가 될 것입니다. 본 비엔날레는 오늘날 디아스포라가 작동하는 방식을 읽기 위해서 지리적인 영토 밖에서 형성되는 역동성과 네트워크를 드러내고, 이를 통해 초국가적인 결속, 보이지 않는 헌신, 코드화된 데이터와 같은 예술적이고 정치적인 소통을 위한 글로벌 미학을 제시할 예정입니다.

Entitled THIS TOO, IS A MAP, the 12th Seoul Mediacity Biennale (SMB12) will open to the public at Seoul Museum of Art and several other venues across the city of Seoul from 21 September to 19 November 2023. A press and professional preview day will take place on 20 September. Developed to imagine the global aesthetics of the non-territorial, the project focuses on alternative concepts of mediating and relating that live outside of borders and looks to the necessity of abstractions and hidden and deliberately obscured languages to communicate shared existence. The project refers to the global relations that take place within Seoul and its industrial surroundings, and the positions and references of those willingly and unwillingly displaced, often multiple times over, whether within or outside of the city and state. The Biennale looks at systems imposed or created outside of national borders, including transnational solidarities, “underground” commitments, the coded mapping of data and infrastructure, as well as those of artistic and political communication.

2023년 6월부터 소개되는 ‘엽서 프로그램’은 비엔날레를 경험하는 일종의 임시 장소가 됩니다. 본 프로그램은 작가, 필자, 참여자, 비엔날레 팀과 미술관 관계자를 엽서 생산자로 초대하여 동시대 삶을 해석하는 다양한 엽서를 만들고, 서울시립미술관 서소문본관, 협력 공간 및 온라인에서 배포하는 방식으로 운영됩니다. 다양한 배경의 참여자들이 생산한 엽서 이미지는 드로잉, 사진, 텍스트 등 다양한 형태를 가지며, 이 모두는 개인적이고, 철학적이며, 추상적인 언어를 기반으로 합니다. 이렇게 모아진 엽서는 기여, 편집과 유통의 행위를 통해 동시대 사회를 읽는 공동의 지도를 형성하며, 엽서는 기념품으로 간직되거나, 개인적인 서신 전달에 사용될 수 있습니다.

Launching June 2023, the postcard program adds an ephemeral facet to the Biennale, inviting artists, writers, collaborators, Biennale team members, and SeMA staff to contribute their own personal, philosophical, abstract, or affective maps through images, photography, or text. These submissions are printed and circulated around Seoul and may be collected as keepsakes or sent to friends by post, creating an unusual communal map through acts of contribution, compilation, and distribution.
