Art Sonje Center, Garden and etc., Hanok
As the fourth exhibition this year since the first exhibition held in 2012, the REAL DMZ PROJECT 2015 largely consists of two exhibitions, held in the town of Dongsong in Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do, and at the Art Sonje Center in Seoul. This guide book, published for the exhibition at the Art Sonje Center, introduces the participating artists and their works, and also contains texts by the curators and the exhibition-related program contents.
Using various abandoned facilities in the DMZ-bordering town of Dongsong, including shops, cathedrals and bus terminals, the REAL DMZ PROJECT 2015: Lived Time of Dongsong opens in Dongsong on August 13th, 2015. Unlike previous projects which centered on inaccessible sites within the Civilian Control Line, the 10-day exhibition REAL DMZ PROJECT 2015: Lived Time of Dongsong extends the project into the actual town with access to commercial and cultural facilities, and strives to reach the local community at a more intimate level. The exhibition then expands to Seoul, sharing ways of seeing and questioning the DMZ area where the history of the past and the life of the present, and tension and daily life coexist. For this exhibition, the curators and participating artists conceptualized the exhibition according to the different contexts of the DMZ borderland and the art museum in Seoul, such as the difference in the site-specificity and the audience, and the disparity between everyday space and public space.
Following the exhibition in Dongsong, the exhibition at the Art Sonje Center from August 29th to November 29th makes a thorough use of the art center including its 1st and 3rd floors, the traditional Korean Hanok and the courtyard, presenting works of various forms, including painting, photography, video, sound and site-specific installation. The exhibition presents works by international and domestic artists whose contemporary art explorations and experiments take form of long-term research on the space and history of the DMZ and intimate communication with local residents in the border area.
The REAL DMZ PROJECT has been conducted every year through a system of collaboration between researchers and artists of various fields. This year in 2015, the project continues to embrace open participation and collaborative organizational structure. What’s notably different from the previous exhibitions, however, is that the project this year presents artists and organizers based on recommendations who are interested in the issues of the DMZ. To prepare for the exhibition, the curators and the participating artists visited the DMZ bordering area in Cheorwon together, and shared in discussion of exhibition methodology, venue and projects. In other words, the project has been conceptualized on the basis of active participation, invitation, mutual agreement and respect. This goes beyond the purpose to diversify the organizers and artists of the event, and strives to look at the DMZ as an expanding and overlapping social boundary and to open up multiple viewpoints on the many tangible and intangible boundaries in our society, including the generational gap among the artists. Keeping a critical mind and attitude, the REAL DMZ PROJECT hopes to respond to various forms and approaches and aspires to develop a site of discourse and exchange of ideas on what demilitarization means in contemporary society.
