Collection of the artist
Joo Jae-Hwan presents 39 bricolage paintings and 1 sculpture as part of the Biennale. These works were constructed by assembling various non-traditional art materials that were found in Joo’s studio with each work capturing a story that features a critical view of society and life. For example in An Unbearable Calculation, Joo makes a commentary on the price of art vis-à-vis the price of eggs in South Korea by sticking a newspaper clipping from the Joongang Daily Newspaper on top of a used egg carton and broken egg shells. In the commissioned Oh Dear Wall!, Joo mounts a canvas on the wall with the front against the wall. Here, Joo attempts to give the walls of the exhibition an opportunity to view the works.
Joo Jae-Hwan, (b. 1941), was one of the founding members of the Reality and Utterance art collective — a group of young, revolutionary and rebellious artists who came together in October 1980 — under the motto of “Speaking truth with art.” His works are often made with found objects and detritus of everyday life as embedded in his daily life and are profoundly insightful but generously humorous observations of life.
