Jooyoung Lee works through collaboration and community-based projects to examine the relationships between overlooked elements and the histories embedded in everyday surroundings. Presented in diary form, Let's Walk and Chat Together : Yokohama Chapter, A persona journey inspired by anarchist Kaneko Fumiko(2012/2026) traces the life of Fumiko Kaneko, a Japanese anarchist who died in prison in 1926 after being convicted of plotting to assassinate the emperor.

The Step After the Last Step

ASAKUSA is a curator-run project space in Tokyo that fosters dialogue and critical exchange through collaborative curatorial practice. Based in Asakusa, a neighborhood historically associated with popular entertainment culture, it operates with a small, project-based team, moving across the boundaries of established institutions. For the 16th Gwangju Biennale, the ASAKUSA pavilion presents a pavilion at Yangnim Cultural Center, extending the act of border-crossing into a self-reflexive curatorial practice.
The exhibition traces the stories of those rendered illegible as they cross physical, social, and political boundaries in East Asia and beyond. It considers collective memory and amnesia, as well as how stories are passed down and brought back to life through oral narration. At the same time, it examines how personal histories become entangled with political narratives shaped by upheaval, migration, and ideological conflict. Through moving image, photography, comics, diaries, and letters, Heidrun Holzfeind, Tomoko Kikuchi, Marina Lisa Komiya, Jooyoung Lee, and Yoshiko Shimada explore the lives and resistance of subjects who remain outside state apparatuses and disciplinary structures, including anarchists and counter-hegemonic thinkers. The exhibition asks how forms of social stratification—including gender, sexuality, and class—intersect with conditions of labour, accessibility, and migration. Some works trace figures of resistance caught up in turbulent historical events, while others reimagine the ordinary lives of migrants and queer people whose experiences are often absent from official records.
